Improvements have begun to create a recommended space along the Thames River to support the safe and respectful scattering of funeral ashes into the water.
The Riverside Boat Launch at 520 Riverside Drive is undergoing upgrades this fall that will improve access to the water, add signage, and provide space for the scattering of ashes, paddling, and other park uses. This work will be completed by the end of 2023.
“We’ve received a number of inquiries from Londoners about the ability to scatter ashes in City parks and along the Thames River,” says Paul Yeoman, Director of Parks and Forestry. “Although there are no restrictions to this practice along the banks of the river and in any park, we recognize the importance of having a recommended site to provide the community with an accessible, tranquil, and safe location. We’ve been evaluating potential access points, and the Riverside Boat Launch offers a large space where friends and families can reach the water.”
Scattering funeral ashes on waterways is allowed in London and permission from the City is not required to scatter funeral ashes in London parks or into water. People who wish to scatter ashes are not required to use the Riverside Boat Launch, but it will provide a larger and more accessible access point to the river.
Additional recommended sites will be incorporated into future park and shoreline improvements in the years to come.
Londoners hoping to scatter ashes are reminded to always be cautious near the river, and to check the weather and local flooding information before visiting. Please do not leave other items in the water or on the shoreline, such as food, cloth, notes, photos, or wrappers from bouquets.
