Tips to Help Navigate London’s Downtown Core

Summer festival season in London’s downtown core is in full swing, which means lots of food, music and fun activities for Londoners and visitors to enjoy all summer long. With a calendar full of events and ongoing core construction projects, the City of London is sharing a few helpful tips to help you navigate your way around the downtown core.

Navigate Detours Using the Waze App

Motorists can expect some event-related road closures and construction-related detour routes around the downtown core. Get around construction on Dundas Street, York Street and other areas by using the Waze navigation app to get real-time traffic updates while driving.

Find Parking Downtown

Find the locations of Municipal parking  lots in London’s Downtown Parking Guide and sign up and scope out a parking spot using the Honk or Hangtag app before you head to a festival downtown. In addition to City owned parking lots, there are also privately owned lots available around the core.

Cycle Your Way Downtown

Consider cycling to festival for a change! Since the separated bike lane on King Street is now complete, there’s a cycling connection from the Thames Valley Parkway to Colborne Street to Queens Avenue and secure bike parking options to be found along the way.

Sit Back, Relax and Enjoy the Ride with Public Transit

Transit users my experience some delays heading to the downtown core due to construction. If your route has been interrupted or if there’s been a temporary bus stop re-location, look to London Transit’s website to get the details on all service changes. Plan your transit trip using realtime.londontransit.ca for up-to-date bus arrival information.

Explore Downtown on Foot

Crews working in our city strive to maintain accessible walkways through event spaces and core construction zones. Always stay alert and keep your head up as there may be temporary sidewalk closures, ramps and narrow or uneven surfaces in these areas. If unsure of conditions, bring a friend, or call your downtown destination ahead of time.

Check out Renew London for Construction, Special Events and Road Closures

If you encounter a closure you’d like to know more about, consider checking out the interactive map on Renew London to search street names and find out exactly what’s going on. Roads will be busier while events are taking place, so don’t forget to allow for a bit of extra time to get to and from your destinations and when travelling during festival season.

Visit Tourism London for a calendar of events and festivals taking place across the city this summer. Be sure to bring your reusable water bottles with you and refill at one of the City of London’s hydration stations.
