A successful 23rd annual London Cares Curb Hunger Food Drive comes to an end

The London Food Bank now has 48,200 lbs of additional food on its shelves thanks to the generosity of Londoners who participated in the 23rd Annual London Cares Curb Hunger Food Drive.

Plus, the number will only go up as food is grown through the Plant. Grow. Grow a Row program which provides gardeners the option to donate fresh produce. This portion of the London Cares Curb Hunger Food Drive has plenty of room for more participants.

“For 23 years, London has come together and proven we care through supporting the London Food Bank and the London Cares Curb Hunger Food Drive,” said Mayor Ed Holder. “This amazing community-wide initiative is a heart-warming reminder of how truly good our city is, as we continue to recognize the need to support our most vulnerable.”

This year’s food drive kept pace with last year’s drive when 49,360 lbs was collected. After 23 years, the running total for one of Canada's most unique food drives has now passed the 1.43 million lbs mark.

“A key part of the 2019 Food Drive was furthering our work with rescuing food from grocery stores,” said Jane Roy, Co-Executive Director of the London Food Bank. “Working with City staff we have branded the program Community Re-Fresh which contributed 6,920 lbs of rescued food during this drive, a 15% increase over 2018. This is a year round program.”

“We are grateful for all non-perishable and fresh food donations and for those that offered cash donations,” said Jay Stanford, Director, Environment, Fleet and Solid Waste. “Every pound counts in our mission to help Londoners in need during the drive and into the summer months ahead.”
