2018 Week: JULY 9-13
Application packages are due by May 7, 2018.
OPEN HOUSE: April 14th, 2018 from 10am to 12pm (drop-in, no registration required)
Both held at London Fire Department Training Complex, 746 Wellington Road
Non-residents of London are welcome to apply, but if accepted will be responsible for their own accommodations during the week of camp.
This exciting program is for females 15-19 years old who are interested in learning more about a future career in firefighting. It is a remarkable, week-long training opportunity and is one of very few such programs offered in North America. The London program is modelled after a similar camp developed by the Ottawa Fire Department. The training is valuable, yet extremely intense and physically demanding.
The purpose of Camp FFIT is to provide young females with first hand knowledge and exposure to performing the duties of a firefighter, and to encourage more women to consider a future career in the Fire Service. There are very few female applicants to firefighter positions, and women continue to be underrepresented in the London Fire Service. In London and across North America, only 3% of firefighters are female. Through the Camp FFIT program, The Corporation of the City of London hopes to raise awareness amongst young women of the exciting and rewarding opportunities that a career in the Fire Service provides.
All successful applicants will be sent a formal registration package with additional forms and a payment request in the amount of $150. This payment will cover all activities, a Camp FFIT t-shirt and Friday’s lunch prepared by London Firefighters. Financial assistance is available for London residents who qualify through the Parks and Recreation Play Your Way Fund. Assistance for non-residents is also possible. Payment details will be included in the formal registration package, if accepted into the program.
