The City of London was one of four cities in Ontario to test out the use of new energy mapping tools to help municipal governments and utilities make better plans for energy efficiency and conservation. Energy maps have proven to be useful as both a planning tool, and as public education and engagement tool.
Since 2014, London Hydro and Union Gas has been providing City of London staff with annual energy use at the postal code level. City staff can then match up this data with property data to provide maps showing the different aspects of energy use in homes at the block-by-block level:
- Average monthly household electricity and natural gas costs
- Relative energy efficiency of homes on a floor area basis
- Greenhouse gas emissions from household electricity and natural gas use
