Road closures in preparation for lane openings on Adelaide Underpass

Beginning Wednesday, April 10, Central Avenue and McMahen Street will be closed on the east side of Adelaide Street North to support preparations to permanently open one lane of traffic in each direction under the underpass.

Road closures on Central Avenue and McMahon Street will remain in place until fall 2024. During this time, local traffic can access McMahen Street and Central Avenue from Elizabeth Street. As always, cyclists and pedestrians are encouraged to watch for wayfinding signage to safely navigate around construction.

Northbound and southbound traffic on Adelaide Street North will continue to use the temporary bypass road until the new vehicle lanes under the underpass permanently open. Additional information about vehicle lane openings and sidewalks in the area will be released once timing is confirmed.

Project Milestones

This month will mark a major project milestone, as Londoners begin to travel under the new underpass for the first time. Additional milestones to be completed this year include:

  • Reopening all traffic lanes under the underpass
  • Completing active transportation components
  • Restoration of park amenities

About the project

The City of London is reconstructing Adelaide Street North from Elias Street to just north of McMahen Street, and Central Avenue from William Street to Elizabeth Street. The project is adding an underpass beneath the rail tracks, to allow traffic to continue flowing while trains are crossing; and adding intersection improvements and active transportation connections through the area, including wide multi-use paths on both sides of Adelaide Street.

We acknowledge with gratitude the financial support provided by the Government of Canada and the Province of Ontario for the Adelaide Underpass project through the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program (ICIP): Public Transit Stream.
