Union Gas and the London Fire Department received calls again earlier today from residents concerned about an unusual odour in parts of the city.
The Ministry of the Environment and Climate Change has confirmed that this odour is a result of a process upset within the wastewater treatment facility at a company located in the south end of the city.
The process upset has resulted in odours leaving the site. The odour can be described as a biological odour (sour/cabbage/sulphur smell) that is easily confused with the smell of natural gas. At this time the Ministry does not have any information to suggest that the odour is a concern to the environment or the community.
The Ministry has attended the facility and continues to work with the company to address the odour.
Although the odour that is currently being reported is not a natural gas leak and does not pose a threat, a natural gas leak can be very dangerous. If you suspect that there is a natural gas leak, please call Union Gas or 911 from a safe distance.
