The City of London provides aquatic services to thousands of Londoners every day, and strives to ensure a healthy, respectful and inclusive environment at all times.
Over the past three days, there have been a number of questions regarding the use of change rooms in aquatic facilities. Universal change rooms are available at many locations. In cases where they are not, the practice has been to encourage children over the age of three to use the change room of their gender. In cases where the child is not accompanied by a parent or guardian of the same gender, City of London staff assist in finding alternative arrangements which are safe and comfortable for everyone.
The practice did not reflect the provisions of the Parks and Recreation Area By-law. In light of the confusion, all signs at City of London pools regarding age requirements for using change rooms have now been removed. In accordance with the By-law, should a parent or guardian need to access a change room with a child under the age of twelve, they will be able to do so with guardian supervision regardless of the gender of the child.
The City will continue to ensure aquatic facilities and services remain safe, respectful and inclusive for all Londoners.
