Reporting Street Light & Traffic Signal Outages

More than 30,000 street lights are numerically identified as part of the interactive CityMap service

Londoners' reports of street light and traffic signal outages are an important contribution to the safety of our community. Providing this assistance is easier than ever with the introduction of a street light identification function via London CityMap and a 24/7 hotline number (519 661-2641). Here's how these services work:

London CityMap CityMap street light symbol

Using our interactive map - say, by an address search - you can view the City's street lights. CityMap's street light inventory is shown as orange dots (for optimal viewing the recommended scale is 250 metres). By clicking on the "Identify" tab at the top of London CityMap, then clicking on the orange dot representing the "out" street light you'll see a pop-up screen "CityMap: About This Street Light." Appearing to the top right, the pop-up screen provides the location and ID number to report when making a service maintenance call to 519 661-2641.

The CityMap location and identification number you provide assists in the efficient maintenance of more than 30,000 street lights.

Hotline 519 661-2641:
Street Light and Traffic Signal outages

When you call the 519 661-2641 hotline, you'll receive the following touch-tone telephone options:

Pressing 1 for street lights - your call is automatically forwarded to Langley Utilities Contracting Ltd. whose responsibility for maintenance of London street lights starts May 1, 2004.

Pressing 2 for traffic signals - your call is automatically forwarded to Guild Electric Limited, the contracted company for this service work.

Whether the option is 1 or 2, you'll receive a request to provide specific information regarding the outage and leave a contact name and telephone number in case additional follow-up is needed.

Note: Street lights on newly constructed subdivisions are the responsibility of the developer to maintain and outages should be directed to their representative.

If you have a street light or traffic signal question not related to maintenance please call 519 661-4580 during business hours - 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday to Friday. A City of London staff member will be happy to assist you.

Minimum Maintenance Standards and Response Times

The maintenance requirements of the City's street lights are governed by the Municipal Act, 2001, Ontario Regulation 239/02, Minimum Maintenance Standards for Municipal Highways. The following minimum response times are used to prioritize the repair of the street light failures:

Major roads (Class 1 and 2)

- If only two consecutive lights or less than 30% of the lights per kilometre are out, then no action is required.

- If three or more consecutive lights or 30% or more of the lights per kilometre are out, then the City has seven days to repair the lights after being notified of the outage.

Minor streets (Class 3, 4 and 5 with posted speed limits 80 km/hr or higher)

- If only two consecutive lights or less than 30% of the lights per kilometre are out, then no action is required.

- If three or more consecutive lights or 30% or more of the lights per kilometre are out, then the City has 14 days to repair the lights after being notified of the outage.

The response time for all other outages is 28 days.

We appreciate your reports of street light and traffic signal outages. Our 24-hour-a-day hotline number is 519 661-2641.
