2012  Projects in Environmentally Significant Areas

 

The following is a list of City of London parks projects in ESA's to be completed in 2012.  The table includes a location map (click on the park id), a description of the project and a staff resource assigned to the project.  Further information relating to the project can be obtained by contacting the identified staff member via e-mail or by calling 519 661-4980.

Emerald Ash Borer Inventory City The City of London, in partnership with the Upper Thames River Conservation Authority will be completing emerald ash borer surveys throughout London environmentally significant areas (ESAs). The purpose of this project is to identify healthy ash trees which may benefit from an injection of treeazin. Treeazin is an insecticide which selectively targets the emerald ash borer. The information gathered through this study will help direct future management efforts in London’s ESAs.
 
Invasive Species Strategy City The City of London, in partnership with the Upper Thames River Conservation Authority will be surveying for the presence of invasive species throughout London Environmentally Significant Areas (ESAs). The information gathered through this study will help direct future management efforts in London ESAs.
 
Killaly Meadows Environmentally Significant Area P-320
  • A wooden stair case located on an existing hiking trail near Wakefield Crescent and Northridge Public School will be removed in 2012.
  • The existing Thames Valley Parkway between Highbury Avenue and Killaly Road will be reconstructed in 2012.
Meadowlily Woods Environmentally Significant Area P-185 An existing hiking trail located on 14.2 hectares of land recently acquired by the City (east end of Meadowlily Woods) will be formalized and managed by the Upper Thames River Conservation Authority in 2012.
Medway Valley P-002D Trail master planning program for the portion of the Medway Valley Heritage Forest north of Fanshawe Park Road. A public process to review the options for tails and/or pathways to be located within the Medway Valley.  Please find attached a comment sheet from the March 28th neighbourhood meeting.
Sifton Bog Environmentally Significant Area P-088
  • The City of London and Upper Thames River Conservation Authority will continue implementing an ongoing buckthorn management strategy. Buckthorn is an invasive, non-native shrub species found throughout Sifton Bog. Efforts to reduce this species presence at Sifton Bog began in 2011 and will continue into future years.
  • A new hiking trail linking the information kiosk on Hyde Park Road to the ESA entrance at Hazeldon Lane will be implemented in 2012.
  • The Upper Thames River Conservation Authority will continue efforts to remove goldfish from Redmond’s Pond.
Trails in Environmentally Significant Areas (ESAs)   A new Planning and Design Standard is being considered for Trails in Environmentally Significant Areas (ESAs).  This Design Standard is being presented to Planning and Environment Committee on Monday June 18th, 2012 at 7pm for approval as a planning and design tool for use in the development of trail master plans and/or Conservation Master Plans for ESAs.
