City prepares for stormy weather from Hurricane Sandy
With the remnants of Hurricane Sandy expected to sweep through southern Ontario
starting Monday, City crews are preparing to deal with any emergencies.
Environment Canada reports that rainfall amounts of 25 to 50 mm are expected,
however higher amounts to 150 mm are possible during the next 72 hours. Winds
are expected to pick up overnight with 40 to 60 km/h sustained winds and gusts
from 70 to 100 km/h possible.
Dave O’Brien, the City’s Manager of Emergency Services said: “I suspect the
biggest issues will be flooding and perhaps some downed trees and associated
hydro issues if winds are significant. City crews are working to clear storm
water sewer grates of leaves. We are monitoring weather conditions closely.”
Londoners are advised to ensure they have working flashlights and a stocked
72-hour emergency kit. They are also asked to stay away from downed power lines,
secure outdoor items like patio furniture and avoid any roads covered over in
water.
