Backpacks for Elliot Lake heading north
The City's campaign to outfit 1,300 Elliot Lake children with back-to-school
backpacks was a roaring success.
A total of 1,354 backpacks were donated to
help children and families struggling with back to school shopping following the
collapse of the town's main mall in June.
The backpacks will be delivered to Elliot Lake this weekend.
Donations came from ordinary Londoners as well as local businesses. Bell
employees donated 500 backpacks to the campaign and other companies and
organizations, including Goodlife, London Police Service, St. Thomas
Firefighters, Talbot Marketing, Grand Touring Cars/Premier Automotive Group,
also helped push the campaign goal over the top.
Cheryl Finn, Director of Sports Tourism for Tourism London and organizer of
the campaign, said: "I want to give special thanks to City of London employees,
local businesses, the hundreds of individual public donors and Mayor Fontana,
and Coun. Harold Usher for their support of the initiative. Thank you Londoners
for continually supporting other communities in need of assistance."
