City to conduct swimming pool fence by-law enforcement blitz

Municipal Law Enforcement Officers will be conducting an enforcement blitz of the Swimming Pool Fence By-law for the next two weeks.

The focus of the blitz will be on pool fencing, including temporary fencing which is required during all phases of construction of a pool installation project.

"With the school year ending we can expect summer activities to be in full swing and this includes the activities of the backyard swimming pool," said Orest Katolyk, Manager of Licensing and Municipal Law Enforcement Services. "We want to ensure pool owners are in compliance with the Pool Fence By-law to keep children safe around these pools."

Infractions of the Pool Fence By-law could result in a fine of $350 plus costs. In addition to fines, in extreme cases the City hires a private contractor to install or fix temporary fencing where there is none, or where the existing fence fails to meet the by-law requirements.
