What's Involved
This page provides information on the following aspects of the birth
registration process:
Some documents are in pdf format. To view or print them, you need
a program such as Adobe Reader. This software is available free of charge and can be obtained by clicking the graphic to the right.
You may apply for a birth certificate, a certified copy of birth registration or a search. Guarantor information must be provided for subjects aged 9 and older. For online Birth Certificate applications (only), the Office of the Registrar General (ORG) guarantees that your birth certificate will be delivered to you within 15 business days or your money back.
You may now order birth certificates online by filling out the interactive form with help features to guide you through the
application process. A number of changes have been made to the current form including the waiving of the guarantor for children 8
and younger. Payment for online applications must be made by credit card. When completed, the form is sent electronically to
the Office of the Registrar General (ORG).
Birth certificate applications submitted online will be processed within 15 business days, (shipping time is included) instead of
the regular six to eight weeks for paper applications, provided the applications are complete and accurate.
There is no proof of urgency requirement for this new 15 day service.
The new online application is accessible through the ServiceOntario website
at www.serviceontario.ca.
Birth Certificate applications can be obtained for the City Clerk's Office or the Registrar General's website. If you wish to inquire about the status of birth certificate, please call 1-800-461-2156 or 1-416-325-8305.
For a child under the age of one year, the Newborn Registration Service is the fastest and simplest way to get your baby's birth certificate and Social Insurance Number. Using the Newborn Registration Service to apply
online means you'll get these documents several weeks faster than if you applied by paper. Once registration is completed, your child's birth certificate will be issued within 15 business days. At the same time, your child's SIN application will be processed immediately by Service Canada and the SIN card delivered within 5 business days. Remember, both documents depend on a completed birth registration.
To begin, visit www.serviceontario.ca and click "Life events" to begin or see a checklist of information required to complete your child's birth registration.
