Power Outages & Generators

In the event of a power outage...

  • Keep flashlights and spare batteries handy at all times

  • Avoid using candles and never carry candles around

  • If you have a propane barbecue or stove, make sure to have a supply of fuel for cooking

  • Never use a propane stove or barbecue inside

  • When the power goes out, turn off all appliances that were on at the time of the failure

If you are considering installing a generator in your home...

  • Ensure all wiring is completed by a qualified electrician if installing a permanent generator

  • If using a temporary generator, plug appliances into the generator using appropriate heavy duty extension cords suitable for outside use

  • Never run a generator indoors

  • Store spare fuel for the generator safely

  • Keep the generator dry at all times.  Operate it on a dry surface with a canopy or cover if it is wet outside

  • Make sure you have battery operated smoke and carbon monoxide alarms or that hardwired ones have a battery back up

  • Always follow manufacturers instructions when using a generator!
