Appliances

Though most appliances come with some type of heat control system, these safeguards have been known to occasionally fail.  Follow these tips to keep your family safe!

General appliance safety

  • Never use a faulty electrical appliance or one that has a frayed cord, cracked or broken plug, or any appliance that has given you some sort of shock!

  • Always unplug appliances by pulling on the plug, not the cord.

  • Always make sure appliances such as heaters, ovens and stoves are turned off prior to leaving the house.

  • Don't place fan heaters, televisions and electrical equipment in areas with restricted airflow.

  • Keep combustible material (clothes, bed linen, curtains and tea towels) away from heaters, lamps and stove tops.

  • Clean the lint filter of your dryer after each load.

  • Clean ovens and hot plates regularly to prevent build up of spilt or burnt foods.

  • Ensure you use the proper watt bulbs in lamps and light fixtures.

  • Make sure any appliance you use in your home complies with CSA/ULC standards!

Electric blankets

  • Blankets should be checked at the beginning of the cold weather season for any damages.

  •  Check all wires and plugs or for hot spots.  If the blanket has been damaged, replace it.
Blankets should be laid flat across the bed, avoid creasing the blanket.

  •  Use the blanket only to warm the bed and turn it off when you get into bed.

Toasters

  • Unplug toaster when not in use.

  •  Clean out crumbs after each use, crumbs can burn.

  •  Never ever stick a knife or fork or any piece of metal into a toaster to remove a piece of toast.

  •  Unplug the toaster first and wait a moment before trying to free the bread.
