Construction & Building

Construction and building contains a wide variety of resources for both the professional contractor and home do-it-yourselfer. Here you will find building permit and planning information for specific properties, as well as interactive tools to apply for permits online. Information is also accessible concerning the Ontario Building Code and City of London building and zoning by-laws.

NEW - May is Building Construction Safety Month

We rarely question our safety when we are in buildings in which we live, work, shop or play.  This is because of the high standard in which buildings in Ontario are constructed.  In Ontario, the minimum standard for new construction, additions and alterations to existing buildings is set out in the Building Code.  London's Building Division enforces the Building Code by examining building plans and specifications, issuing permits and performing inspections through the various stages of construction.

To promote the vital role Building Officials play in ensuring the safety of buildings and their occupants and to create awareness of the building regulations, the Ontario Building Officials Association in cooperation with local Building Departments, the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing, the Alliance of Canadian Building Officials Association the building design industry, promotes May as International Building Safety Month.

  • permit fee deferred until after the permit is ready to be issued

  • improved communications when revisions are required
  • separate structural drawings will allow us to review plans and conduct inspections more quickly and accurately
  • reduced paper plans for us to handle and store
  • we save time entering application information into our database

Want to use the system?

Home builders wanting to apply for online permits need to register to use the system.  As part of the online registration process, you will be asked to provide your Tarion Warranty Corporation number.  Once this information is verified, typically within 24 hours, you will receive an e-mail to confirm your registration.

You are also required to submit separate structural drawings with your online permit applications. These structural drawings, absent of all architectural detail, make it easier to see structural information to check that point loads transfer properly from the roof to the foundation.  Prior to submitting your first online application, your will need to apply here for registration (insert hyperlink). You will be asked to email us architectural and separate structural plans for a sample house so we can ensure they comply with our requirements.
