Frequently asked questions

How do I access the IVR Service?

To access the touch-tone IVR service, dial (519) 661-5284. You will then be prompted to provide the following information:

  • The application and/or permit number(s) for the address
  • The inspection code number(s) listed in the IVR User's Guide

Note: The IVR User's Guide brochure is available in a pocket-sized version from the Building Division, 7th Floor, City Hall, 300 Dufferin Avenue. You can also request either the full-size or pocket-size version of the IVR User's Guide by telephone 661-4555; fax 661-5184 or e-mail.

How up to date is the information provided through the IVR service?

The IVR System significantly improves the turnaround time for information on applications and permits. Previously, the data entry of inspection results involved a multi-step clerical process. With the IVR System, inspectors can now post results as soon as they've completed an inspection. A voice mail message also may be left for the client.

Why is there a 11 p.m. to 2 a.m. shutdown?

The three-hour period (11 p.m. to 2 a.m.) is used for daily back-up of data and system maintenance.

What record will exist for my IVR transaction?

At the end of your IVR call you'll be issued a confirmation number. We recommend you keep a record of your confirmation numbers and associated transactions in case they are needed for future reference.

Can I still communicate directly with Building Division staff?

Absolutely. Just as before, in-person and telephone inquires are handled by Building Division staff, Monday to Friday, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Also, if desired, the IVR System allows the option of speaking directly with a staff member as long as your call occurs within normal business hours. The IVR System was developed to let contractors and builders zero in on the information they need almost around the clock, seven days a week.
