The City of London is at the forefront in recognizing the need to identify, remove and prevent the construction of barriers to persons with disabilities. Since the development of the Facility Accessibility Design Standards (FADS) document and its adoption by Council in October 2001, it has become the accessibility design standard of choice. More than two dozen surrounding municipalities and private organizations have adapted
all or parts of it for their use and it is anticipated that this list will continue to grow.
The Facility Accessibility Design Standards are applied in all newly constructed and renovated facilities owned or leased by the City of London. Its application to private sector projects is encouraged but voluntary.
The Facility Accessibility Design Standards reflect
universal design principles which benefit people of all ages and abilities. An example of universal design is the use of power assisted doors, a feature that everyone can utilize be it somebody pushing a baby stroller or kids lugging hockey equipment as well as a person using a wheel
chair. Click
