Work beginning on York Street as part of downtown sewer separation

On Monday, May 6, weather permitting, crews will begin construction on York Street, from Clarence Street to Wellington Street, to replace aging sewer infrastructure.

Installation of temporary signals and lighting will be underway for approximately 1-2 weeks as crews prepare the area for construction and upcoming lane closures.

Londoners can expect the following traffic impacts during the construction project this year:

  • Closure of Clarence Street at York Street with no access to/from York Street beginning in mid-May 2024
  • Reduced lanes on York Street between Clarence Street and Wellington Street from May to July 2024
  • Full closure of York Street from west of Clarence Street to Wellington Street from July to December 2024

The anticipated timing of traffic impacts may shift as the project progresses. A Public Service Announcement will be issued prior to each stage of construction to share information about associated traffic impacts.

Work will be limited to York Street, between Clarence Street and Wellington Street in 2024. The second phase of the project will occur in 2025, with staged road closures anticipated on Wellington Street, from King Street to Horton Street, and on York Street, from Wellington Street to Colborne Street.

Construction impacts:

Access will be maintained to residences and businesses, which remain open during all stages of construction.

The sidewalk on the south side of York Street will remain open during construction. Signage will be used to help guide pedestrians in the area.

Motorists and cyclists travelling on York Street should expect delays in the area later this summer, once York Street is closed, and will be encouraged to use alternate routes where possible.

London Transit is not expected to be impacted as part of the York Street construction in 2024.

About the downtown sewer separation

As part of the Downtown Sewer Separation program, this project involves major improvements to underground municipal and private utility infrastructure. This important work is necessary to support a growing population, increase sewer capacity for new development and separate combined storm and sanitary sewers to help improve the health of the Thames River.
